Warm Salted Caramel

One of the many things to love about fall is the bountiful harvest of apples! Sweet. Tart. Crisp. APPLES! The next best things is all the delicious treats that you can make with apples! One of my favorites is this recipe for salted caramel! I keep it warm in a small Crock-Pot for gatherings or warm up a small bowl to enjoy on my own! It's buttery sweetness with a hint of sea salt is the perfect companion for crisp, tart apples!

This recipe from the Carlsbad Cravings blog is super simple and it's ready to enjoy in about 10 minutes! Here's how to make it: 


3/4 cup of butter 
1 1/2 cups brown sugar, packed 
2 Tablespoons of water
1/4 tsp of sea salt 
1/2 - 3/4 cup of evaporated milk 
1 Tablespoon of vanilla extract 

Add butter, sugar, water and salt to a saucepan and stir over medium heat until the butter melts. BE SURE to use a metal spoon and not a wooden spoon to stir the caramel! Wooden spoons hold onto to trace amounts of moisture which will cause the caramel to crystalize. You want it to be silky smooth! Then bring ingredients to a boil for about 5 minutes! It will be foamy and frothy! 
Remove from the heat and add in 1/2 cup of evaporated milk and vanilla. Stir to combine. Add more evaporated milk to reach your desired consistency. Enjoy with apples! You can even kick your caramel apples up a notch by sprinkling them with chopped honey roasted pecans or shards of dark chocolate!!
